September 28th, 2019 marks the 60th anniversary of Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev’s visit to Coon Rapids. Thanks to a friendship with Roswell Garst, Khrushchev came to Iowa and drew crowds of over 25,000. This event is remembered as one of the most important moments in this land’s history.
K60 will be celebrated with a full-day commemoration, featuring CNN Historian Timothy Naftali as a guest speaker. There will also be a dedication for Whiterock’s new statue, a copy of “Let Us Beat Swords into Ploughshares,” which is displayed at the United Nations Headquarters.
K60 is free and open to the public, though there is an optional free-will donation. A lunch sourced from local foods will also be provided.
