Site of the 1959 Khrushchev visit and former home of Roswell & Elizabeth Garst, this inviting 5 bedroom farmhouse is on the National Register of Historic Places. The communal living room, dining room, and kitchen include a collection of artifacts, photos, books and films guests are welcome to view and enjoy. Subject to occupancy, guests may visit each of the individual rooms which are full of antiques and historical photographs.

Yard and garden features include outdoor seating and picnic areas, charcoal grill, shade trees, and flower garden. Fishing pond, a bonfire tree and trails are just a few steps away. The main pond has recently been fully revitalized and restocked and has a wheelchair accessible pier and can be reached by vehicle. Buffalo are pastured nearby and are fun and easy to watch.

Stay includes a complimentary self-serve continental breakfast, TV, DVD and wireless internet in all rooms.

Hollyhock Cottage

Cozy Hollyhock Cottage is set in the beautiful yard with the historic Garst farmhouse next door. The decor reflects the cottage’s history, first as the family chicken coop, then hired hand’s house and later Elizabeth’s garden shed. The renovated cottage offers all amenities, including A/C, a TV and DVD player, and a few family friendly games.

Hollyhock is perfect for a small family or groups of 5-6 people. The bedroom has a queen bed. The living room has twin bunk beds and a full-sized sofa sleeper.

The fully-equipped kitchen has a stove, apartment sized refrigerator, dining table, microwave, coffee pot, basic pots and pans and tableware. A picnic table, lawn chairs, charcoal grill, and a bonfire ring are nearby. An excellent fishing pond and the town-loop trail system connect to Hollyhock’s yard. An optional self-serve continental breakfast is available next door. Pets are welcome, but must be kept off of the furniture.  $150 per night, two night minimum during high season.

Woodland Carriage House is located in the heart of the Whiterock Valley above the garage for the next door private home and the historic dance barn. The decor has a “lodge” feel.

Woodland is spacious, sleeping up to seven people. The bedroom has a queen and twin bed. The great room houses the kitchen and living room. Two queen beds are also located in this living area. The unit is equipped with A/C, library, and family friendly games.

The fully equipped kitchen includes a vintage but functional wood burning cook stove, an electric stove, full-sized refrigerator, dining table, coffee pot, microwave, basic pots and pans, and tableware.


A charcoal grill and picnic area are set up right outside the Carriage House. Located nearby fishing ponds, multi-use trails and the Middle Raccoon River await your adventures.

Pets are welcome! Dogs are welcome to be inside if you are with them and keep them off of the furniture. There is plenty of room in the facility for your own dog kennel.

$165 per night, two night minimum during high season.

Oakridge is a very large, private farmhouse deep in the countryside on a ridge overlooking Whiterock Valley. Deer, coyotes, wild turkeys and grazing cattle are frequently spotted from the house.

Oakridge House

Ideal for a family reunion or corporate retreat, this house has an official sleeping capacity of 13. A spacious living room and kitchen allow for serving up to 30 people. Five bedrooms total, the main floor bedroom contains a queen and a twin bed. Three bedrooms upstairs are usually configured with two twin beds each, though with advance notice, these can be converted to short king beds. The last upstairs bedroom contains two queen beds and a seating area. There are two full bathrooms in the house (1st floor and 2nd floor) and also an upstairs hallway vanity with sink. Many family reunion groups tuck in extra children in the spacious living room and the ample bedrooms.OakridgeLivingRoom

Oakridge offers full amenities, including A/C, TV and DVD player, iron and ironing board, family friendly games, and library. The kitchen is fully-equipped and serves up to 30 people. It includes a full-size refrigerator, stove, dining tables, microwave, coffee pot, basic pots and pans, and tableware.

This private yard include a bonfire ring, charcoal grill, and picnic tables. The yard is great for family games such as basketball, croquet, and horseshoes. Trails are located out the back door and fishing ponds are within walking distance. The Oakridge RV and horse campground is located nearby.

Pets are welcome! There are two dog kennels available for use in the garage. Dogs are welcome to be inside if you are with them and keep them off of the furniture. There is plenty of room in the facility for your own dog kennel.

Campground & Cabins

Whiterock Conservancy offers three campgrounds, a single primitive campsite and a remote primitive cabin. The 805 River Cabin must be reserved, the Oak Ridge and Star Field Campgrounds have some spaces that are available to be reserved by phone. All other camp sites are on a first come, first served basis. Please register at the self check-in kiosk before setting up camp. You can make a reservation for the 805 Cabin online anytime.

No outside firewood is allowed to help control the spread of invasive species. Firewood is available for sale in the campgrounds.

805 River Cabin
This remote cabin moved into the valley from 805 Main Street, Coon Rapids, many years ago. It’s a rustic retreat sitting between a spring-fed pond and the Middle Raccoon River in a beautiful, yet secluded valley teeming with wildlife. Deer, wild turkey, coyote, beaver, and songbirds fill the surrounding woods and nearby clearing. This site is designated as a strictly hike-in, bike-in or horseback ride-in site from the Main Campground.

Garst Farmhouse

The 3-season cabin includes a small bedroom (with three twins), a living/sitting room (with twin), an upstairs loft (with two twinds) and a small sitting area. Six twin foam sleeping pads on platform beds are provided. YOU MUST BRING YOUR OWN SLEEPING BAGS. Screen windows are covered with shutters. A small table, chairs and a lantern are provided.805RiverGuests

In the large yard there is plenty of room to pitch a few tents. A picnic table, bonfire ring, charcoal grill, and clothesline are available. Bring your fishing poles to catch dinner in the backyard pond or river.       The property includes an old-fashioned outhouse and a shower house with a sun warmed water tank set atop the unit. There is no electricity, running water or drinking water.

Dogs are welcome at 805 River Cabin. Horses can also be kept at the cabin in an open steel pen (we have two available), on the tie line, or by closing the gate and allowing them to roam within the small fenced in area surrounding the cabin.

It is approximately a 1 mile hike or bike ride following the river single track trail or a few miles by horseback following the main trail. A Gator can be rented from Whiterock Conservancy to assist in getting your materials to the cabin, weather permitting. Call ahead to inquire and make your reservation. Absolutely NO ATVs allowed. $50 per night.

The River Campground, situated in the heart of Whiterock Valley, is a perfect access point for 42 miles of trails. The campground sits along a bend of the Middle Raccoon River, amid gorgeous sandstone outcroppings and our resident cliff swallow colony. This particular bluff, from which Whiterock derives its name, is the largest vertical outcrop of Cretaceous Dakota Sandstone in the Midwest.

The campground’s 5 sites are very accessible for tents, campers, RVs and horse trailers. All are available on a first come/first served basis. The cost is $12 per tent/camper per night. Please register at the self check-in kiosk before setting up camp.

Each site is equipped with a picnic table and bonfire ring. The campground area shares a dumpster, port-a-potties, and sun warmed water tank atop a shower house. A potable water faucet is located in the campground. Limitations: no electric or water hookups are provided, no external generators are allowed, no outside firewood is allowed. Firewood is available for sale in the River Campground.

Several horse tie lines are provided, along with a manure pit and wheelbarrow. Several steel pens are available to rent on a first-come first-served basis at $8 per night.

Several excellent fishing ponds, trailheads, adjacent river with easy access, and a nearby abandoned 1800’s log cabin are within hiking distance.

star field campground areaLocated on the edge of a gorgeous woodland and oak savanna, the Star Field campground provides privacy and amazing nighttime views of the sky. The campsites lie about 1/2 mile off the nearest gravel road, on a sandy flat trail, near the Star Field single track trails. Drive to your site on one of the surrounding ridgelines to unpack and then park in the overnight parking area (this helps reduce the chance of lights on the Star Field after dark).

Each site is equipped with a picnic table and bonfire ring.  A shower house with restrooms and running water is located near the parking area and port-a-pottys are located closer to the campsites.  Limitations: no electric or water hookups, no RVs and no horses are allowed. No outside firewood is allowed. Firewood is available for sale in the campground. The campsites are $12 per tent per night. Ten sites are available on a first come/first served basis. Three sites that are large enough for larger groups can be reserved with 24 hour (or preferably more) notice. Call Guest Services at 712-684-2697 x102 to make your reservation.

We have the darkest skies around and this is the best location for star gazing. Pop your tent and watch the skies!

Camp Host Wanted: The Star Field campground has an RV site for a camp host. If you are interested in volunteering for a weekend, week, or longer please contact guest services at guestinfo@whtierockconservancy.org or (712) 684-2967 Ext. 102.

Oak Ridge Campground
The Oak Ridge Campground is officially OPEN! This campground features 13 sites nestled under an oak grove with scenic views from the ridge and has immediate access to 35 miles of trails, about 20 miles of which are open to equestrians. Each site has electric hook up, a gravel parking pad, fire ring and picnic table. Eight sites are 55 feet long, three sites are 55 feet with additional parking area and two sites are 78 feet long. Three hydrants are located throughout the campground and a central dump station is available.  Thanks to a gift by Gordon Smith, the campground has a small shower house that has two rooms, each containing a shower, toilet and sink. The sites are $18 per RV per night.

There are currently eight horse pens installed for overnight guests to rent for $8 per night. A horse corral is also available for your use.

Additional horse tie ups will be added in the near future. While we are waiting for the hitching posts to be installed, it is acceptable to tie horses to the trees.

Sites 31, 41 and 42 have a 55 foot parking pad with extra parking space. Sites 40 and 43 have a 78 foot parking pad.

One primitive campsite, located near the Garst Home Farm pond is open and ready for your visit. The site has a picnic table, fire ring, port-a-potty near the pond and one of the best fishing locations at Whiterock.
