After much planning and good weather, we were able to plant our prairie strips this week.
Whiterock Conservancy is thrilled to be an active participant in Iowa State University’s the Science Based Trials of Rowcrops Integrated with Prairie Strips (STRIPS) project as an in-depth research site. Iowa State University continues to be innovative and has pioneered the use of prairie in conventional corn-soybean systems. The practice uses the model behind contour buffer strips and integrates diverse native prairie seeding to create habitat for birds, insects, and small mammals. In addition, STRIPS have been shown to retain nitrogen, phosphorus, and sediment on field. With these early findings the ISU research team is excited to expand their research to farm scale demonstration plots around the state – with Whiterock being one site.
